how to get rubber engine hoses off connection

Engine hoses are crucial components in any vehicle's cooling system, ensuring that coolant flows smoothly through the engine to prevent overheating. Over time, these hoses can deteriorate or become worn, requiring replacement. Removing rubber engine hoses from their connections can be a challenging task, especially if they have been in place for a significant period. In this article, we will explore different techniques and tips for safely removing rubber engine hoses to facilitate hassle-free replacements.

1. Preparing for Hose Removal: Safety First!

2. Inspecting the Hoses for Damage or Wear

3. The Effortless Method: Using Hose Removal Pliers

Preparing for Hose Removal: Safety First!

Before you begin the process of removing rubber engine hoses, it is important to ensure your safety. Start by turning off your engine and allowing it to cool down completely. This step reduces the risk of burns due to hot coolant spilling out when removing the hoses. Additionally, wearing protective gloves and safety goggles is highly recommended to prevent any injuries during the process.

Inspecting the Hoses for Damage or Wear

Before attempting to remove the hose, it is essential to inspect it for any visible signs of damage or wear. Cracks, bulges, or soft spots in the rubber can indicate that the hose needs replacement. If you identify any such issues, it is advisable to replace the hose entirely. If the hose appears to be in good condition, you can proceed with the removal process.

The Effortless Method: Using Hose Removal Pliers

Hose removal pliers are specialized tools designed to facilitate the easy disconnection of rubber engine hoses. These pliers comprise a long, slim tool with serrated jaws that provide a strong grip on the hose without damaging it. Follow the steps below to use hose removal pliers effectively:

1. Identify the connection point: Determine where the rubber hose connects to the engine or other components.

2. Slide the hose removal pliers: Slide the pliers fully onto the hose, ensuring they are positioned close to the connection joint.

3. Squeeze and rotate: Grip the pliers firmly and squeeze the handles together. While maintaining pressure, rotate the pliers clockwise and counterclockwise to break free any seal or bond between the hose and connection.

4. Wiggle and pull: After breaking the seal, gently wiggle the hose from side to side while pulling it away from the connection. This motion will help loosen the hose, allowing for easier removal.

Alternative Approach: Utilizing Heat to Loosen the Hose

Sometimes, rubber hoses can become tightly secured to the connection, making them difficult to remove with conventional methods. In such cases, applying heat to the area can help loosen the grip, making removal easier. Follow these steps to use heat effectively:

1. Heat the connection: Use a heat gun or a hairdryer on its highest setting to apply heat directly to the connection joint. Move the heat source continuously around the joint, ensuring even heating.

2. Test the flexibility: After heating the connection for a few minutes, check the hose's flexibility by gently squeezing it. If it feels softer and more pliable, it is an indication that the heat is working.

3. Use hose removal pliers: Once the hose is sufficiently heated and flexible, grip it with hose removal pliers as described earlier and proceed to remove it using a wiggling and pulling motion.

The Old-School Technique: Employing a Flathead Screwdriver

In some instances, you may not have access to specialized tools or a heat source. In such cases, a flathead screwdriver can be used as an alternative tool to remove rubber engine hoses. Please note that this method requires extra caution to avoid damaging the hose or the connection. Follow these steps carefully:

1. Position the screwdriver: Select a flathead screwdriver that can easily fit between the hose and the connection joint. Position the screwdriver's tip between the hose and the connection, ensuring it has a solid grip on the hose.

2. Pry gently: Applying gentle pressure, pry the screwdriver away from the connection while simultaneously rotating it. This motion helps break any seal between the hose and the connection.

3. Soften the hose: If the hose feels too tight, you can sprinkle some hot water on the connection joint to soften the rubber. This additional step can make the removal process smoother.

4. Wiggle and pull: After breaking the seal, slightly wiggle the hose back and forth while pulling it away from the connection joint, allowing it to come off more easily.

Conclusion

Removing rubber engine hoses from their connections can be a challenging process, especially when they have been in place for a long time. With the right techniques and tools, however, this task can become significantly easier and hassle-free. Whether utilizing hose removal pliers, heat, or a flathead screwdriver, ensuring safety and taking precautions to prevent damage to the hoses and connections are crucial steps throughout the removal process. Regular inspection and timely replacement of worn hoses contribute to maintaining a well-functioning cooling system, preventing potential engine overheating issues.

Peroxide Vulcanized EPDM Filler Neck
This customer is a large-scale main engine plants after-sales support provider.

We contacted us for the first time in July 2019. In the following period, they sent us many inquiries and consulted us on many technical issues. We are patient to help customers solve one by one, leaving a good impression in their mind.

The time has come to April 2020, the customer sent us an inquiry for a tube, this tube has a high temperature resistance requirement, and the shape is irregular, and the forming of the elliptical cross-section has a high requirement for the production process. The customer said that his existing suppliers could not solve these problems, so he asked us for help.

When we got the drawings, we had a preliminary solution for this product. The first point is the mold, the second point is the material.
1.Because of the irregular and elliptical cross-section of the tube, regular molds can not meet the requirements. So we found a machining center and an engraving machine to ensure the size of the ellipse. Section cutting we also use 3D printing to cut to ensure the length of the product and the flatness of the section.
2.The material is peroxide EPDM used by domestic OEMs. The material performance is very good and can reach the Volkswagen standard. Then the process, product performance, peel strength, and pulse are all very good. This product represents the highest standard of materials such as EPDM.

After many test, report and profiles, customer place an trial order. When customer got this product, they gave the highest evaluation, which perfectly met their needs. Now that the trial order has passed the customer's test, the customer will place a official order soon. We are 100% confident to make official orders perfect!
